team “i refuse to acknowledge anders comment about giving fenris back to slavery as canon because it was incredibly ooc and only added because hepler (his openly ableist writer in da2) wanted to prove that being bipolar/mentally ill means you approve of shit like that when you hate someone enough, and it goes against who anders is as a character, what he stands for, and also he’s carrying a spirit of justice in his brain that chewed him out once because he thought having a cat was slavery so lmao fuck you bioware, im not accepting ur ooc and poor attempts at demonizing mentally ill people. go choke”

i would also like to point out that this comment only happens if you as hawke are enough of an asshole to consider selling Fenris back in the first place, which means if you don’t do it then it doesn’t exist for that canon anyway

and honestly? what it reads like to me is an intrusive/impulsive thought that anders failed to rein in. intrusive thoughts often run contrary to a person’s actual morality.

also let’s just forget about anders for a minute and address how this series fucks up with mental illness in other areas

-alistair and cullen both have a possible ending of “wandering drunk/addict” if you treat them badly. it makes some sense for cullen bc his storyline has to do with lyrium directly, but with Alistair it just comes off as mean spirited

-cassandra, fucking straight-laced tight-ship has-her-shit-together with a makerdamned faith spirit in her head cassandra “deal with it” pentaghast responds to your shitty behavior as inquisitor by…becoming an alcoholic. this strikes me as something she would never, ever do and would probably tear anyone else five new assholes for it. on top of that this goes into really painful territory if you have a loved one who is an alcoholic, especially a parent.

-branka from da:o is basically a walking embodiment of the Psycho Lesbian trope on top of the usual stereotypes about mentally ill people being violent and evil. if you listen to ambient dialogue and talk to Oghren and other dwarves it’s pretty clear that branka is neurodivergent and even being a fucking paragon doesn’t spare her from being dragged.

-oghren’s alcoholism is persistently treated as a fucking joke

-kelder from DA2 is severely mentally ill and possibly a victim of religious abuse, but you’re only given the options of killing him or essentially letting him go, despite the fact that kirkwall has a fucking sanitarium and also you basically get railroaded into assisting a suicide

this isn’t just me bitching about tropes i don’t like, this is some legit cheap and lazy writing that makes it look like nobody gave a shit or even actively hates neurodivergent people

i don’t even fucking know for sure if that’s the case but it looks like a fucking duck

this reminds me of how i saw a shit post the other day that was like “lmao those anders stans love saying that it doesnt happen unless youre enough of an asshole to give fenris back anyway but that doesnt mean anything bc it means he still feels that way and they just want to ignore it” and the fact that that’s one of the arguments used to shut down people trying to talk about a legit problem is gross af 🙂 like hey maybe dont derail from the fact that its still a problem as a concept regardless of it happens buddy

It also comes from Helper’s severe dislike of Anders/writing Anders and her blatant ableism. She took an abused man who’s coded as mentally ill and thought it was a good idea to have him condone abuse?

Why?

To paint a mentally ill abuse survivor as someone we shouldn’t like.

Because not only is it completely against both Justice’s and Anders’ previous writing, but she hated him so much that she felt she needed to drag him OOC to make us hate him.

Anders: [speaking of Ser Alrik] I’ve been in the Gallows. I’ve seen his work first hand.
Hawke: Then perhaps the blame can be laid on him, and not every Templar.
Anders: That’s what I hope. If we bring the evidence of this plan to light, there must be men who will stand against him. Perhaps even the Grand Cleric will be forced to act.

But Anders is just a Templar-hating radical, right? It’s not like he was a hopeful man who had faith in the goodness of people until he was shut down time and time again and all those “good people” went along with an abusive tyrant for years.

I think this is the same part where he actually gives Meredith the benefit of the doubt, too — he says something like “at least she thinks she’s helping people, but Alrik is a sadist”, or something like that.

And when they finally had hard evidence against Alrik, and brought it to Cullen and Elthina, and Elthina dismissed it entirely and Cullen went so far as to imply that he would support making all mages Tranquil? I’m pretty sure that’s the exact moment when Anders lost another huge chunk of his faith in people and hope for nonviolent change.
