Me: yeah you know I try to avoid DA character wank, just live and let live, and–

Someone: Anders was an evil terrorist

Me:

@pyros75

He WAS a terrorist. Fight me.

Oh good, a chance to use my degrees.

Ander was not a terrorist. Just because he blew something up does not make him one. Terrorism is not a universally agreed upon word, true, because it is a fraught term, but the word itself kind of carries the most important part of the act; to cause terror, specifically to do so with some political goal in mind. As a consequence, intent is vital in determining acts of terror, and fortunately we have plenty of in-game evidence for why Anders did what he did – in fact he tells us directly, and we have no reason to disbelieve him, because ALL the supporting evidence proves him to be honest.

The single most important line is when Anders says, right after the explosion, “I have removed the chance of compromise because there can BE no compromise.” Now, we can differ on whether he is correct in that assessment, but his objective was very clear. He wanted to attack a specific, highly symbolic target; to admit it was him and him alone (He doesn’t even let a romanced Hawke know what he’s up to.); and when the Templars used it as a pretext to invoke the Right of Annulment and kill all the mages in Kirkwall’s Circle, to thereby demonstrate that they are motivated not by the facts of the matter but by a prejudice and a brutal system of oppressing mages.

Anders knew that the Right had already been called for by Meredith, and had been denied by the Divine, which in fact causes him to seriously question whether a peaceful solution COULD be found. And let’s not forget that, after coming face-to-face with his lover, Karl, and finding that the Chantry had violated their own laws to make him Harrowed, after seeing all the other injustices of the Kirkwall Circle, he still tried for the better part of a decade to solve the situation by peaceful means, through agitation, through spreading his manifesto, through the Mage Underground. By the time he actually takes action it is an immediate need, and he is proven totally correct in every part of his belief and expectation. He is standing right there and says he did it, offering no resistance, and Meredith storms off to kill every Circle mage. The alternative was to wait until the Right was approved, letting Meredith brutalize and illegally make Mages Tranquil all the while, and then watch every Mage in the Circle be butchered. By doing what he did and exposing Meredith, he gave them at least a chance to fight back or escape.

NO part of this equation involves terror. The plan did not hinge on, did not require, did not call for anyone to be change their actions because they were cowed. He had a calculated plan and no aspect of it involved terror. Anders was NOT a terrorist, not by any proper use of the word. I am not arguing here that Anders was right or wrong, that is a related but distinct matter. I am arguing for a proper application of the terms used to describe him and what he did, because we can’t even discuss whether he was right or wrong if we aren’t using the right terminology in the first place, and if we’re just going to use loaded terms like “terrorist” because we disagree with what he did, the discussion is over before it can begin.

If I say that I love Zevran or Thane, no one will ask how can I like an assassin.

If I say that I love Isabela, no one will question my morality because of her being a pirate.

If I say that I love Iron Bull or Krem, people won’t judge me, even though they are both mercenaries.

If I say I love Hawke, most people will agree, and won’t mind that they have worked as smuggler or mercenary, and done a lot of shady stuff, killed hundreds.

If I say that I love Sten, people won’t think I’m twisted, even though he murdered the people who saved him, and their children, in cold blood.

If I say I love Jack, people are okay with that, even though her criminal record is pretty impressing.

“Murder, assault, kidnapping, drugs, stealing, arson. Done it all. And that was the boring shit. Piracy, theft of military craft, destruction of a space station, and vandalism.”, she tells you.

But if I say I love Anders, who tried to stop the genocide of his people and therefore committed an act of violence, I am asked “How can you like that monster?”

tired of dealing with anders haters who are so loud and proud over their hate and feel they need to post it all over on anders positive posts like

i get it, you’re boring af and have a shitty personality
relax Barbara, go outside

I have no idea what Anders’ Vengeance skill symbol is supposed to represent and at this point I am afraid to ask. Srsly though, what is that? An ocularum of a tranquil Saarebas? A goat with a flower on its forehead? A satanic deity called Bahomet, supposedly worshipped by the members of a real Templar Order in XIV century France (or so they confessed to during torture)? Halp.

Vengeance, also known as Ram Skull Hellflower Mode,

(joking aside, the only thing I can think of is the Baphomet/Knights Templar connection. maybe it’s shorthand for ‘fuck the templars, they claim to be righteous but that’s some bullshit’.)

my personal interpretation is:

CROSS

image

The Christian Cross, seen as a representation of the instrument of the crucifixion of Jesus, is the best-known symbol of Christianity. It is related to the crucifix (a cross that includes a usually three-dimensional representation of Jesus’ body) and to the more general family of cross symbols. In contemporary Christianity, the cross is a symbol of the atonement and reminds Christians of God’s love in sacrificing his own son for humanity. It represents Jesus’ victory over sin and death, since it is believed that through his death and resurrection he conquered death itself. See Colossians 2:15, “Having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross” [x]. Also:  The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is an international humanitarian movement with approximately 97 million volunteers, members and staff worldwide which was founded to protect human life and health, to ensure respect for all human beings, and to prevent and alleviate human suffering [x].

BUCRANIUM

Bucranium, plural bucrania (Latin, from Greek βουκράνιον, referring to the skull of an ox) was a common form of carved decoration in Classical architecture used to fill the metopes between the triglyphs of the friezeof Doric temples. The name is generally considered to be a reference to the practice of garlanding sacrificial oxen, the heads of which were displayed on the walls of the temples [x]. It means SACRIFICE and/or SELF-SACRIFICE to achieve a higher goal (generally the gods’ benevolence for the community).

JUSTICE

Iustitia, Justitia or Lady Justice (Latin: Iustitia, the Roman goddess of Justice, who is equivalent to the Greek goddesses Themis) is an allegorical personification of the moral force in judicial systems. Lady Justice is most often depicted with a set of scales typically suspended from her left hand, upon which she measures the strengths of a case’s support and opposition. She is also often seen carrying a double-edged sword in her right hand, symbolizing the power of Reason and Justice, which may be wielded either for or against any party [x]. It’s interesting to notice that Bioware used the scales&sword as the symbol of Anders’ power “Vengeance”, but what it actually means is “Justice”. I wonder if it was just superficiality on their part or if there’s more to it.

SACRED HEART

image

The devotion to the Sacred Heart (also known as the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Sacratissimi Cordis Iesu in Latin) is one of the most widely practiced and well-known Roman Catholic devotions, taking Jesus Christ’s physical heart as the representation of his divine love for humanity [x].  The flaming heart of Jesus (and also sometimes the lesser known heart of the Virgin Mary) has had an enormous iconographic vocation. Depicted in paintings, stained glass and votive offerings, it became a commonly reproduced object unattached from its original context by its sheer aesthetic force (as in tattoos, for example, or in fashion). Its origin lies far back in time, in a set of mystical visions, ascetic impulses and theological reflections between the middle ages and the Renaissance [x]. In other words, another reference to martyrdom and self-sacrifice.

!!! THANK YOU I love this, it makes so much more sense now. The only ones I understood before were the scales and the cross.

I love that Vengeance’s symbol actually connotes self-sacrifice because far too often I see people act like Anders and Justice’s actions were strictly about anger and revenge which is so so oversimplified.

Aaahhh I can’t believe I got Anders!! (And a grey warden, how fitting.) And here I thought I was going to get a fucking fenris or something as I bought a couple of “the heroes of thedas” mystery figures.

I had a mass effect inspired anders dream. Basically i was watching this random scifi/dragon age themed film with my family. The protagonist was in a space ship. A mysterious figure appeared, his back towards the camera. The protagonist asked him something (apparently “what do you do here?”) and the figure turned around to face them.

It was Anders, turning dramatically and taking his ponytail off to release his gorgeous blond hair. And he said:

“I fucking control the motherfucking cockpit.”

At this point of the dream I was screaming in joy. Then anders began talking about how he became the pilot of the ship. He said “Imagine having to leave behind your loved ones… leaving him.” I knew he was referring to Hawke. Flashback of Hawke happened. Then the dream ended.

lol i wish i could write a fic of this.
